Ashleigh's Must-Have Hiking Items

Hiking must have items

Let’s go hiking! Check out the gear list!

Summer is right around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to go hiking in the mountains! I can’t wait for the trail to be dry and have those awesome long days getting to those dream lakes. I love heading off to the alpine lake, maybe even more than the summit! I have bagged a few 14ers but I just love the magic of a lake! It just invites you to relax in your hammock when there is a lake view.

Hiking basics!

There are a few things that if you are going more than 4 miles roundtrip that you just need! A pack to hold all your snacks and items. Hiking poles because they the weight off of your knees and allow you to be able to hike longer with more weight. A rain jacket for afternoon storms and also doubles as a wind jacket to keep you warm if you are heading off to the summit. Then you can layer it with a vest to get you nice and toasty. A good pair of hiking boots that are comfortable and not too small. I learned the hard way that you will lose your toenails if your shoes are too small! The wonderful thing about Colorado is that the sun is always shining, you’ll need a hat and sunnies to see anything! And a bennie and gloves, yes even in July!

Hiking Safety items!

I really am into safety, I want to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe out there on the mountain. That’s why the number one thing that needs to be with you is a map and compass! You have got to know where you are and where you are going as well as be able to identify 2-3 highpoints. Let’s not get lost out there! Whenever you are outside on the mountain you’ll need to make sure you are wearing sunscreen! One because of skin cancer, two if you have an event coming up, you don’t want to look like a lobster or have really distinct tan lines. Rember this when picking out your dress and swimsuit combo! It’s best to have the same lines so you don’t have to worry as much about the lines. I also think you need an extra pair of socks. You never know when you are going to have to cross a stream or accidentally fall in (if you are clumsy like me)! It’s also a great idea to have some way to drink water in the wilderness safely and a LifeStraw can make any water drinkable. You can also grab the Chlorine Dioxide Tabs if you in a jam situation, you’ll drink weird tasting water just make sure you wait for them to start working. Even if I’m only supposed to be hiking during the day, I always bring a headlamp, just in case I’m hiking slow or it gets dark sooner than expected. Some things you need all the time, like all the items above, but in springtime and fall, you might need microspikes! Those spikes are put on safety items because they can help you from falling off the cliff! Remember it’s always easy to hike up than it is to hike down on icy trails.

Hiking Food and Water

No hangry people on the trail, Okay! That means we need actual food, like sandwiches to sustain ourselves! Then we usually carry some bloks to keep us hiking and Justin’s to make sure we can have dessert on the trail, that also have some protein. Nuun is also great to help keep you hydrated when working hard or have an early morning. So drink water, every day, all the time to make sure you are ready for altitude.

Relaxation and Fun Extras

Relaxing is almost the whole point of hiking! So why not arrive in style with a hammock to relax on and snuggle up in with your puffy blanket for a little nap. Then heat up your hot coco or hot toddy in your jetboil before you hike out. I also just love to have clean glasses and camera lens so I love having a few of these lens wipes in my bag to make sure that I can see the glistening lake.

Hiking Elopement

Hiking in the mountains is one of my favorite things to do. If you love hiking as much as I do you could even do it on your elopement day! You could say your vows at sunrise in the mountains in a secluded mountain lake or vista. Why not celebrate your love in a place you love. Contact me if you want to book a Vow Adventure!
